Fuel circuit in low power outboards This is the simplest system of all. The fuel, stored in an overhead tank, supplies the carburettor by way of a stopcock and flexible hose. However, the breather valve on the fuel cap must be open when starting the engine and, of course, closed during transport or storage. Fuel circuit on outboards with a separate fuel tank The system is a little more complicated when the fuel supply is in an auxiliary tank. The fuel is sent to the carburettor after passing through a filter, a host of junction fittings, the manual pump or priming valve/bulb, another filter and finally the main fuel pump.
